Rotterdam Beats 2011

29.11.2011

Rotterdam Beats 2011As a member of the Roots&Routes network I was very curious when we received an invitation to go to ‘Buma Rotterdam Beats’ to celebrate the 10 years of Roots&Routes Netherlands, the mother ship of the R&R.

I work for the Wcc Zuiderpershuis, a cultural institution in Belgium. I’m working on high level hip hop ‘school’ starting in 2013. When I looked at the programme of the festival I was amazed by the conferences: national and international speaker on actual subject concerning urban music.

I spend almost all of my time in Rotterdam on attending the conferences, which were good. It was nice to see that mix of urban artists and urban organisers and managers,
together trying to learn and improve the status of urban arts in the Netherlands.

With my Belgian experience I can tell you, the Netherlands made huge steps forward when it comes to professionalism into urban arts compared to Belgium, even though they’re far from where they should be.

My top 3 moments were the debate between bookers of the international pop festivals Splash!, Hipnotik, Hip Hop Kemp and Southport Weekender. Especially the booker of Hip Hop Kemp gave a very good impression.

Another moment I liked was the demo feedback moment. I first thought the feedback would stay general things, but I really got concrete things to do to improve the songs we have. The best moment for me was of course watching the ten years of R&R Netherlands. It was a strong show with dance and a nice live band. I was impressed by the band Ron-Le-Bass and very very impressed by singer, rapper lady D-Luzion.

During the festival I less appreciated missing Internet at the venue. I didn’t really participate to the night concerts. But no worries I was in good company, thanks to R&R Netherlands.
