Kif Kif is an intercultural youth platform in Flanders (Belgium). The association came into existence in 2003 with the creation of the website ‘Kif Kif, the intercultural website of Flanders’ (www.kifkif.be). As a result of the success of the website and other activities, the organization grew rapidly in the past years. At the moment Kif Kif is one of the most prominent organizations in Flanders concerning intercultural matters.
As a grass roots organization Kif Kif has grown ‘from within’. From the very beginning the organization has had a very open character and welcomes anyone who can agree with the vision of the organization. As we have a special focus on youngsters they can of course join the organization, be as a ‘passive’ member, a volunteer or in the board.
The mission of Kif Kif states the following: ‘Kif Kif wants to facilitate a diversity of voices, to improve the active participation of all citizens in our society, to deconstruct negative and stereotypical discourse and to stimulate critical reflection. To realize these goals, Kif Kif starts from a clear vision: democratic, pluralistic, antiracist and progressive’.
Kif Kif has three main focuses:
- Media and media literacy: we have a much visited website with texts from staff, volunteers or third parties; organize workshops on journalism and mediawatch on a regular basis, are active in the public media debate in Flanders, write books, give workshops in schools and NGO’s on various topics, …
- Work as a mean for emancipation: we organize job fairs, offer information about the (intercultural aspects) of the labor market, organize workshops, offer consultancy, launch campaigns to promote interculturality on the labor market (with a special focus on youngsters from migrant origine), …
- Culture as a mean for emancipation: we organize various competitions, publish books, give workshops (on urban cultures), organize colloquia,
